Homestay for Adult students with English families
We encourage you to stay with local host families (homestays) where you will be warmly welcomed into their home as a member of their family. A host family can be two parents and children or one parent with children or couples/single people with or without pets and children. We will do our best to find the accommodation that suits you best ie special diets, types of families and rooms.
Host Family Options available:-
- Self-catering/room only (over 21 years) =buy your own food and share the family's kitchen
- Half board Standard = breakfast and dinner with your family every day
- Half board Standard Plus = breakfast and dinner with your family every day, plus a private bathroom
Staying with a local host family gives you the opportunity to practise speaking and listening to English in an informal way. You can experience the English way of life and make new friends - many of our students stay in contact with their host families for years after they have left the school!
Most families live within walking distance of the school so you don't have to take a bus or a train to go to and from school or to attend our busy social programme.
When you arrive in Totnes, your host family will collect you from the coach or train station if possible and show you where to go to school in the morning. You can relax as soon as you arrive in our lovely town! Please remember to tell us when and how you are arriving!
Homestay for Teenage students with English families
We offer full board accommodation (breakfast, packed lunch/school canteen and dinner) for all teenagers (12-16 years) in shared rooms (single rooms are sometimes available- please ask us!)
Most of our families live in Totnes, within walking distance of our summer school premises. Families living outside Totnes will provide transport to the school.

All families are regularly inspected by our accommodation manager.
Useful tips for your stay with our host families
- Talk to your host family and tell them what you are doing. Respect their home and traditions.
- Tell your family what food you like or dislike - and remember to be helpful - this is one of the best ways of getting to know each other.
- Check what time meals are served. Telephone if you're going to be late or miss dinner (teenagers must be home for all meals). Ask before you take food. If you are self-catering, check when you can use the kitchen and remember to wash up afterwards.
- If you are 17 years or under, come home before your curfew. Contact your family if there is a problem.
- Check with your family if you can watch the TV, use the internet/telephone, listen to music or have friends to visit.
- Adult students- don't forget to lock the door when you leave the house and give the key back at the end of your stay.
- Your family is here to help you - so ask them for help - or come and talk to someone at school if you are worried about anything.
What to bring to England
- Bring clothing for all weather conditions - including a good raincoat!
- Bring good walking shoes or boots so you can enjoy the countryside.
- Bring your laptop - the adult school has WIFI access and you'll need the internet for our new TSE Online e-learning package.
